L = Literature

Oscar Wilde said: If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.

All great writers are readers. We consume stories. Many writers are veracious readers. Writers read to learn their craft. In learning the craft of writing, reading great writing inspires writers to produce their best.

Shakespeare

Classic Literature

McGuffy’s Reader

Enlightenment Essays

US Political Debate/Speeches pre-Civil War

In reading material that is well written, the writer develops skills and critical processes. A well-developed writer schedules time to read new and classic literature.

A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people. ~ Will Rogers

I now look back and thank my High School Honors English teachers. At the time, great literature seemed like a slog, but I now appreciate their enthusiasm.

Will Rogers is too funny.

I agree, but of course reading is my pleasure every single day. Will Rogers is right, but I would add, "smart, but not arrogant." I have a favor to ask, would you read my blog tomorrow, "M is for Marilyn." Thanks, N.

The question is, do we read because we're writers, or do we write because we love to read?

Looking forward to more A to Z

Our L posts go very well together :D I completely agree with you - it's so important to read books of all caliber and in different genres. You never know what you're going to learn about your own writing through reading the writing of others. And you never know what might inspire you :)

So true. All of us start out writing because we love reading so much. :-D

At least I think we do.

Reading or even gaming through a well crafted story is virtually a need with me.
