C = Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane
1941
Directed by Orson Welles

Orson Welles as Charles Foster Kane
Dorothy Comingore as Susan Alexander

Eveybody’s talking about Citizen Kane. It was true in 1941 and still true among film lovers today. The remarkable film was innovative and a show piece for the then new director Orson Welles.

Citizen Kane tells the tale of a media mogul’s life.  At the time, William Randolph Hearst was the largest newspaper magnate. He was so offended by the references and similarities to the Kane character that he prohibited mention of the film in any of his papers.

Today, one could use the name Rupert Murdock and tell a similar tale.

B = Boondock Saints

Boondock Saints
1999
Directed by Troy Duffy

Willem Dafoe as Paul Smecker FBI Agent
Sean Patrick Flanery as Connor MacManus
Norman Reedus as Murphy McManus
Billy Connolly as Noah MacManus
David Della Rocco as David Della Rocco

Fraternal twins come up against it after immigrating to the US and finding themselves in the muck of the city. Just being ‘good’ they find they have a knack and luck at vigilantism which is also profitable.

Troy Duffy keeps the moments moving along at a quick pace. If you’re slow, you’ll miss half the hilarious dialogue. The shoot scenes are played in regular motion and slow motion with an investigative feel that allows for extreme violence with pseudo-scientific analysis.

Lots of violence, even more language, Boondock Saints isn’t for everyone but it is a great action film regardless of how you shoot it.

A = Affair To Remember

Affair to Remember
1957
Director: Leo McCarey

Cary Grant as Nickie Ferrante
Deborah Kerr as Terry McKay

An Affair to Remember is just a feel good film. The playboy, Nickie meets his match on a cruise ship. He finally finds the love of his life, only to be disappointed when she doesn’t show up at the rendezvous.

Of course, Terry wanted to meet him but was seriously injured on the way to the Empire State Building. Sadly, we hear the sirens of the ambulance in the background as Nickie fades into disappointment.

The movie follows the plot of misunderstanding but redeems with true love’s triumph and plenty of ‘Darling’, ‘oh, Darling.’

An Affair to Remember is not for the squeamish and is clearly a chick flick from the 1950s.

R.I.P. me???

It's been a bit odd sharing my name with a famous actress, Kate O'Mara. I had been emailed if I were she in the past. Her short time with nude scenes made me popular with a variety of men trolling facebook and twitter but more recently the elderly actress wasn't popping out as she once was and life had returned to just my own. Until today.

Today, Kate died at the age of 74.

Her name was Frances Carroll but she took the name Kate O'Mara in the 1960s. As it should happen, I got that name about the same time, however it was my parent's that chose it.

When I was young, my friends teased me after watching some of the B movies the other Kate had done: Frankenstein and Dracula were popular for those of us who hung out together on Sunday afternoons to watch Elvira.

She was a vegetarian and an animal activist. I am a vegetarian and I love my dogs. She was an actress who also wrote books. I am a writer and a natural ham-bone with a few extra parts under my belt. The similarities are quite amazing.

But before this goes too far, I'd like my friends and family to know, I'm alive and well, despite what you might read on the internet. I'm alive!

Kate O'Mara is alive!
